Good HR starts with Recruitment | How getting it wrong could get you in trouble

As an employer, you don’t just have to get HR right from day one – getting your ducks in a row needs to start from the recruitment stage onwards, and if you know you need to work on that side of things, now is the time to take action.

An owner of a pizza restaurant in Bridgewater became a great example of why it's so important to get your HR right - even before you start hiring -  because they ended up having to pay the legal costs of a tribunal.

The quirk in the case?  It wasn’t even an employee that took them there.

One fast, unthinking response = a whole lot to answer for...

A woman with mutism enquired about a job at Fireaway Pizza, and a saga ensued, with the owner of the franchise sending a laughing emoji back in the direction of the woman, and eventually blocking her number.

The owner's defence at the tribunal was varied - he didn’t know who she was; it was a busy night in the restaurant; and so on and so forth.

But when it came down to it, the judge decided that his behaviour amounted to harassment and victimisation, awarding her £7,450.

Just to reiterate – the woman had never even interviewed for the job, didn’t have a trial shift, didn’t have a first day, and still won compensation at a tribunal.
