Why this business? Why now?

We love connecting with business owners - they are smart, switched-on and ambitious, and we have a great time discussing HR, company culture, and all sorts of other things when we meet them.

In the course of a discussion, we'll ask these questions:

1. Why did you set up your business? 

2. What does the future look like?

Why do we ask them this? Because these kinds of questions tend to get pushed to the backs of our minds.

When you focus so much on being IN the business, you can forget why you started it in the first place, and where you want to get to in the future.

As a result, you’re liable to make decisions that aren’t congruent with your answers to those questions.

Get clear on your motivations

Maybe you set up your business to allow for you to work around your kids, but now you find yourself missing bedtimes, and opting out of the school run.

Or perhaps your ideal future sees you running a “lifestyle business” but, right now, so much of the business is dependent on you that if something doesn’t change, that future’s never going to materialise.

Sitting back, getting a birds-eye view, and thinking hard about the answers to those questions is a valuable exercise, and we urge you to do that.

Identify your next actions

If your answers to the above questions make you realise you need to make some changes, don't wait until later to sort them out.  It may never feel like a "good time" to pivot, but if you hold back too long you may never take action.
